This qualification is designed to provide learners with knowledge of the basic health and safety practices essential in a health and social care environment. 

How long will it take?

The total qualification time (TQT) for this qualification is 10 hours and of this 7 hours is recommended as guided learning (GL).

Topics covered

The qualification provides learners with: an understanding of the roles and responsibilities for health, safety and welfare; an understanding of the process of risk assessment and how they improve health and safety at work; knowledge of procedures for responding to accidents, near misses and ill-health and knowledge of how to control the risks of infection.

This qualification is assessed by a multiple choice examination.

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is aimed at individuals who are working in, or who aspire to work in, adult social care in England. 

How long will it take?

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 190 hours of learning.

These include Principles of communication in adult social care settings, personal development in adult social care settings, diversity, equality and inclusion in adult social care settings, safeguarding and protection in health and social care, implementing the duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings, the role of the social care worker and person-centred approaches in adult social care settings.

Assessment method

This qualification is assessed by a portfolio of evidence.

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is aimed at individuals aged 19+ wishing to extend their occupational competence as professionals within the health and social care and children and young people’s sectors and who are working as care managers or advanced practitioners within these sectors.

This qualification contains 6 pathways. Learners must select one of these pathways depending on their role and the type of care provision they work in.

• Children and young people’s residential management*
• Children and young people’s management
• Children and young people’s advanced practice
• Adults’ residential management
• Adults’ management; and
• Adults’ advanced practice.

* This pathway is no longer the required qualification for managers of residential childcare settings. As of the 5^th January 2015, the required qualification for managers working in residential childcare and young people's residential childcare services is the HABC Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) (QCF). 

How long will it take?

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake between 586 guided learning hours.

These include systems that promote communication, professional development, equality, diversity and inclusion, health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices in health and social care or children's and young people’s settings, partnership in health and social care or children's and young people’s settings and a research project within services for health and social care or children and young people.

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is designed to support people for whom commissioning forms part of their role in the workplace. It introduces the principles of commissioning for wellbeing to new commissioners, and enables more experienced commissioners to review and update their knowledge.  It is aimed at those who commission adult care and support services, but the content can also be contextualised to support commissioners in health, housing and children’s care. As well as those that work in commissioning roles, this qualification is suitable for those who provide care and support services, in terms of how they commission (subcontract) parts of their own service. It will also be useful for people who are considering a move into commissioning.

How long will it take?

The total qualification time for this qualification is 235 and of this 65 is recommended as guided learning hours, which is approximately a 9-12 months programme.

Units include the role of the commissioner for wellbeing, Commissioning together for outcomes, the commissioning cycle and the professional development for effective commissioning.
